After receiving the signal about the boat disaster, the Harbor Master’s Office units went to sea. Crews pulled over 40 people from the water, including a two-year-old girl. She died on board the patrol boat.
Two migrants, aged around 20, were rescued by fishermen from Lampedusa.
Two children are among the missing, the rescued survivors told the services.
The wave of migration is growing
Late in the evening, a cutter with 400 migrants on board arrived in Lampedusa. On the last section, the cutter full of people was escorted by patrol boats of the Italian Coast Guard.
All arrivals will go to the registration center on the island.
-On Monday, 11 boats with more than 800 migrants arrived in Lampedusa.
In recent days, there has been a renewed increase in the migration wave.
Since the beginning of the year, over 140,000 migrants have arrived in Italy by sea.
