Merleni, 41, works in the only liquor store in the town of Haparanda, which has a population of 6,000, right on the border between the Arctic Circle and Finland, 1,600 kilometers from Malmö and 1,000 kilometers from Stockholm.

– I was very warmly welcomed here and after hours I work as a wrestling trainer, for now at the children’s level. Customers in my shop correct my lame Swedish in a polite or playful way. In this small town, and because I work in the only shop of its kind in the area, everyone knows who I am. It’s a different kind of fame than sports fame,” she told the SVT TV channel.

In Sweden, the state has a monopoly on the sale of alcohol above 3.5 per cent, so stronger beer is only available at the stores of the state-owned chain Systembolaget, which has 440 stores in a country of 10 million inhabitants. Only people over 20 years of age can be customers.

In the province of Norbotten with a population of 300,000 and covering 25 percent of the country’s land area, which includes Haparanda, there are eight Systembolaget stores.
Merleni earns around €3,000 a month gross and pays 30 percent tax, with additional deductions allowing him to significantly reduce it.

The wrestler from Kamieniec Podolski, competing in the freestyle up to 48 kg category, won the Olympic gold medal in Athens (2004) and the bronze medal in Beijing (2008). She is a three-time world champion and twice won a silver medal. She stood on the top step of the podium three times in the European Championships.
