A terrifying discovery: the corpse from Half-Life 2 has the face of a real dead person

It’s fascinating how many secrets computer games hide. Many of them are discovered many years after the premiere, while others are still waiting to be revealed. One of the most disturbing reports is reported by Kotaku. It concerns the character model from the game Half-Life 2 named Corpse01.mdl, also present in some popular modifications. It turned out that the charred carcass that appears many times throughout the game has the face of a real, dead man.

The macabre texture used by Valve was discovered completely by accident. About two weeks ago on a subreddit r/eyeblech someone had posted drastic photographs of dead bodies which he claimed were from a forensics textbook. This fact has been verified, however, due to their macabre appearance, there is no point in publishing them. Someone spotted something familiar in one of the photos.

In the comments to the post, one of the Internet users wrote that the face of the unfortunate who died as a result of the fire looks the same as the model Corpse01 from Half-Life 2. Reddit users quickly started comparing the photos with the in-game model and… it turned out that they look almost identical. Almost, because Valve copied the corpse’s right eye to replace the left one. The entire face of the game model, however, is the face of a dead person from the manual, who died probably as a result of mafia feuds.

One of the developers of Left 4 Dead 2 once explained that Valve creates zombie textures in the game based on real photos, partially modifying them using the technique of hand drawings. Previously, this practice was apparently quite different…

A dark secret that no one expected

Many Half-Life fans reacted with horror when they learned that they had been staring at real corpses in the game for the past two decades. One modder has already created a new model to replace the old one for those people who are uncomfortable looking at a real dead face in Half-Life 2.

Valve has yet to comment on whether it plans to replace the texture. Her presence in the game may be a coincidence and a remnant of early versions of the game.
