At the end of October 2022 in Doha’s Hamad, Qatar, during firemen’s exercises before the World Cup 2022 World Cup football, there was a tragic accident involving a fire ladder. As a result of this unfortunate incident, three Pakistani firefighters died.

Firefighters worked on the company’s ladder Rosenbauer, which, as you can see in the published photos, broke. Apart from several reports from the international press in the days immediately after the accident, the causes of the accident have not been established to this day, there is also no statement from the manufacturer as to what could have caused the ladder to break and what steps were taken to avoid similar events on other ladders.

The accident and the death of Pakistani firefighters sparked worldwide discussion as to the possible causes of the accident.

How did Pakistani firefighters end up in Qatar? Before the soccer tournament World Cup 2022 Teams of rescuers and firefighters from 15 countries around the world were sent to Qatar, including the USA, Great Britain, France, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Palestine, Turkey and Pakistan. It was while working on the ladder of the team from Pakistan that the accident occurred.

The photos show that there were several Rosenbauer ladders in the port of Doha that day. One had an accident, the others are stacked near the accident site. The one that suffered the accident is in the center of the picture. You can see that the two lower bays are raised, and the third one, which has not lost contact with the lower ones, is turned sideways and, together with the upper spans and the basket on them, fell onto the roof of the neighboring building.

The situation is difficult to explain. The ladder worked almost vertically, the basket was not loaded to the maximum, there were only three firefighters in it, and according to the manufacturer’s information, Rosenbauer ladders are prepared for the load of 5 people. So it seems that overloading the basket was not the cause of the accident.

We can also see in the photo that the ladder did not break in the vertical line, but turned to the left on the third span and fell, hitting the roof with the basket.

Did it happen while feeding water from the basket to the right? Careful observation of the basket shows that the cannon mounted in the corner of this basket is turned to the right, in the direction where the water was probably fed. Can the recoil force of the cannon cause a modern ladder to twist and fall with the basket and the people in it?

If the ladder was equipped with a fixed water riser, the load on the basket in this case should be reduced – the structure of the GRP pipe itself has a lot of weight, as well as the water contained in the pipe. But the load on the basket was reduced because there were only three people in it.

Due to safety, the scope of the cannon’s sideways operation should also be limited – it’s a safety issue.

So what really happened? There is an ongoing discussion on the internet forums of many countries about possible causes. Some point to a problem with the strength of the structure, others to insufficient quality structural steel, others to the large weight of the spans of the Rosenbauer ladder itself.

The cause of the accident will be determined by a committee of experts or a technical inspection. All circumstances will be investigated. It will turn out why the accident happened and for what reason the firefighters died.

In our country, there were also problems with Rosenbauer ladders recently, for example in Lublin, the unfolded ladder unnaturally bent to the side – fortunately, no one died and the firefighters managed to evacuate to the ground. After this failure, some service work was carried out on the remaining ladders.

After the accident in Qatar, there was a strange silence. The Rosenbauer ladders used in Poland are still in combat division, there is no manufacturer’s position on this matter or even any information on this subject.

Should Rosenbauer ladders be taken out of use, at least until the technical expertise is issued? Are the firefighters who work on them safe?
