14 iPhones have already hit stores, so nothing can stop their users from conducting experiments, including dangerous ones – the accident detection function was taken over by the TechRax YouTube channel. At this point, it is worth adding that the detection of accidents should do exactly what its name suggests, i.e. when the system detects that our vehicle has hit something – based on, inter alia, sudden changes in speed, direction of travel or characteristic sounds – automatically dials the emergency number (if the driver is unconscious or otherwise unable to speak, he plays a specially prepared message) then sends notifications to people from the list of contacts entered in the emergency section.

And although Apple argues that the crash detection function works and urges not to test it especially because it is dangerous, YouTubers decided to find out about it the hard way. Accordingly, they went to a large deserted area where they set up a few wrecks and conducted two test drives in such “controlled” conditions. It is true that after watching the movie, you can have doubts that it was really safe, but the new feature of iPhones does not raise doubts.

What were the tests like? Youtubers they attached an iPhone 14 Pro to the back of the driver’s seat headrest in a Mercury Grand Marquis carwhich they also equipped with a GoPro camera to document the experiment, and then released it for a solo ride (luckily they didn’t get the idea to stay inside).

During the first drive, the test car hit the wreck with little force, but during the second drive it was much harder (the car was seriously damaged and the airbags were activated) – in both cases However, the accident detection system worked flawlessly, activating 20 seconds after the collision and thus giving the user ample time to cancel the connection if the function works at the wrong time or the user does not need help.

In short, while the experiment was dangerous, it confirms that the new iPhone 14 feature works flawlessly (Google introduced a similar one on its Pixels in 2019). However, it remains to be hoped that we will never have to test it personally, just in case it is worth knowing that it is turned on by default and ensures the safety of users.
