MNT Pocket Reform – a completely open-source and modular mini computer is now available for purchase

-

Almost 10 months have passed since the presentation of MNT Pocket Reform to the announcement of its availability for purchase. The creators of this interesting equipment shared their project on the Crowd Supply crowdfunding platform. The goal, which was 135 thousand. dollars has already been exceeded (almost 161,000 dollars have now been raised), and there are still 40 days left to complete the campaign. The device is more distinguished by its functionality than its specification.

MNT Pocket Reform is available for pre-order now. Unfortunately, after the purchase, we will have to wait a little longer for this modular equipment.

DFI PCSF51 – a small board computer with a powerful processor from the AMD Ryzen Embedded R2000 series

MNT Pocket Reform is quite a specific device. Its biggest advantage is the aforementioned modularity and open-source nature. From the beginning, the creators provide all the schematics of the device and components, so everyone can have access to them and even construct the entire project on their own. Unlike typical laptops, where further expansion is quite limited, here we can replace everything. From the processor to all other components. We can easily expand the equipment with additional accessories compatible with the M.2 Key B connector. The Debian Linux distribution is responsible for the software here. Of course, we can install any other variant later. There is also a mechanical keyboard with switches that we can choose ourselves (Kailh Choc White or Kailh Choc Pro Red). Bluetooth 5.0 and Wi-Fi 5 modules are also available. Looking at the keyboard, we will see a 15 mm precise trackball with four function buttons in front of it.

BeaglePlay – a new desktop platform from BeagleBoard.org available for purchase globally. Another Raspberry Pi competitor

The initial configuration of the device consists of a quad-core processor clocked at 1.8 GHz, 8 GB of DDR4 RAM and 128 GB of built-in eMMC memory. The display is a 7″ matrix with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 px. We will also find a quite capacious battery with a capacity of 8000 mAh, which we charge via the USB-C port. The creators claim that the link should be enough for 4 hours of work. Vivante GC7000UL is responsible for the graphics system. The technical specification is therefore quite decent, but the price of the device is mainly influenced by its functionality. We can easily modify all the equipment and repair it if necessary. The laptop costs $ 899, but if we want to order it to Poland, we will have to pay 1105.77 dollars, so about PLN 4,875. Admittedly, this is quite a prohibitive price for such equipment. However, looking at the money collected so far, you can see that it is still very popular. The date of shipment of packages to customers is expected on 17 October this year MNT Pocket Reform can be purchased from the Crowd Supply website.
