NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Research (CNEOS) spotted the asteroid 2023 BU a few days ago, which is expected to approach Earth on Thursday, January 26, around 10:17 p.m. Polish time. The object will pass our planet at a distance of 3.5 thousand. kilometers. This is the fourth closest approach in history.
The asteroid, which will pass the Earth a short distance, was observed a few days ago at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory in Nauchnyi. Experts estimate that its diameter may range from 3.7 to 8.2 meters.
The object will reach the vicinity of the Earth at a distance of approx. 3.5 thousand km. kilometers, which is less than three percent of the average distance between the Blue Globe and the Moon.

2023 BU is moving at a speed of approx 9.3 kilometers per secondi.e. over 32.4 thous. kilometers per hour. It belongs to the Apollo group, which includes the so-called NEO (Near Earth Objects) asteroids with specific orbits intersecting the Earth’s orbit.
NASA’s Near-Earth Object Research Center has data on past and future near-Earth objects. These data cover the period from 1990 to 2200. According to scientists, the asteroid 2023 BU is about to make fourth closest approach to Earth in history.
NASA: Asteroid 2023 BU poses no threat
NASA reassures, however, that the asteroid does not belong to the category of so-called. potentially dangerous asteroids (Potentially Hazardous Asteroid, PHA). It’s too small to do any damage even if it hits the Earth.-
Astronomy enthusiasts will be able to watch the flyby of Asteroid 2023 BU live with Virtual Telescope.
