The Norwegian divided the world of chess by deciding to submit to a duel with a young American. On Monday, September 19, during the Julius Baer Generation Cup online tournament, the 31-year-old made only one move, and then did not continue to compete.

Carlsen was silent, but the experts agreed why the chess player did so. It was about suspecting the opponent of cheating. The world champion did not officially confirm this, but he did not deny it either.

– Unfortunately, I cannot comment on this in particular, but people can draw their own conclusions and they certainly did. I must say that I am very impressed with Niemann’s performance. I think his mentor Maxim Dlugy has to do a great job – he said.

At the same time, in an interview with chess24, the Norwegian revealed when he would comment on what happened during the Monday game.

“Hope to say a little more after the tournament,” said Carlsen.

The grandmaster, however, did not hide his opinion about the current chess and what is happening in this community. Especially in connection with fraud.

– Different people will answer this question differently, depending on their own experiences. Whether it’s a massive problem or not, I think it’s quite easy to cheat. In general, such people in the future should not be treated lightly, neither on the net nor on the board – he explained.
