After winning the European vice-championship last year, it seemed that the competition in the current edition of the League of Nations would be another field for the English to achieve good results. It did not have to be easy, however, because they ended up in a difficult group with Hungary, Germany and Italy.

Poor results of the England national team

The current runners-up in Europe started their struggle in the League of Nations with an away defeat 0: 1 with Hungary. Then Gareth Southgate’s side recorded two draws – 1-1 with Germany and 0-0 with Italy. In the fourth round of games, there was a huge sensation, because at the Molineux Stadium the English lost to Hungary as much as 0: 4.

The situation of England in the table of the third group after four rounds is very difficult. They have the fewest goals scored of any Division A team (just one) and have not won a single game (and so does Wales). Friday’s meeting with Italy will therefore be decisive in the context of remaining in the elite of the tournament.

England fights for life in Division A.

If the team led by Roberto Mancini wins on Friday with England, he will push them to Division B and in such a situation the rest of the results will not matter. However, if the game ends in a draw or England win, the last series of games will be decisive, in which Southgate’s players will play at home against Germany and the Italians away against Hungary.

Italians are in a better position before Friday’s game. On the one hand, they will play in front of their own audience, and on the other, they can prepare for this meeting without thinking about the world championship. At the end of March, Roberto Mancini’s players sensational lost 0: 1 to North Macedonia and will not go to Qatar.

After four rounds of struggles in the third group of the League of Nations, the unexpected leader of the table is sentenced to relegation Hungary with seven points. Germany is second with six points, Italians are third with five points and England is currently last.

League of Nations group 3 table (Division A):

  1. Hungary: 7 points (4 games, 2 wins, 1 draw, 1 defeat)
  2. Germany: 6 points (4 games, 1 win, 3 draws)
  3. Italy: 5 points (4 games, 1 win, 2 draws, 1 defeat)
  4. England: 2 points (2 draws, 2 defeats)
