Red Bull has lost enormous talent. Now I regret

Oscar Piastri is quite a talent that Alpine and McLaren have recently fought for. Red Bull also had a chance to get the Australian to his academy. The “red bulls” missed the opportunity and now they regret it.

Oscar Piastri won the Formula 2 championship in the 2021 season as a top junior at Alpine’s talent academy. The French wanted to secure him a place in Formula 1, but not necessarily in their own team. The lack of decisive moves towards the 21-year-old made him an interesting offer from McLaren, who, after a long legal battle, finally seized the promising talent.

In the last podcast “Beyond The Grid” it was revealed that Piastri was close to being under the wings of Red Bull Racing. Oscar drove for Arden in Formula 4, he was also in Formula Renault. It was immediately clear that this was a great talent. Red Bull had a chance to look at him but we missed that option, which I regret, said Christian Horner.

The head of Red Bull Racing stressed that if the “red bulls” had taken care of the Australian’s career, it would not have happened like in the case of Alpine, that his future was not properly secured by a contract. “If he were our driver, there’s no way he wasn’t stuck with a contract for a while,” said Horner.

Arden is a junior racing competitor team that was founded by Horner. Piastri raced in his colors in British Formula 4 and Formula Renault from 2017 to 2018. He then joined Renault’s talent academy, later transformed into the Alpine program. He has proven his talent with championships in Formula 3 and Formula 2.

Red Bull runs its own junior program, from which they come from, among others Max Verstappen, Pierre Gasly or Daniel Ricciardo. In recent years, however, F1 has not knocked on talented drivers from the “red bull” program, as a result of which the company increasingly has to reach for external options.

However, according to Horner, this does not mean that Red Bull’s junior program will stop. – We are still investing in youth. We have several young people on the program, from karting to Formula 4 and other higher series. Red Bull has given these kids a chance by investing in them and giving them opportunities that they would not otherwise get, summed up the Red Bull boss.
