She was the German hope for the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. She was considered a great talent. Mia Sophie Lietke has died. The gymnast was only 16 years old.
Tragic information was provided by the German Gymnastics Association (DTB) on Monday evening. Mia Sophie Lietke died suddenly at the age of only 16.
The exact cause of the athlete’s death is unknown. According to “Bild”, there is a suspicion of sudden cardiac arrest. An autopsy will be performed on the young gymnast’s body.
– It’s impossible to find words to describe it – said coach Magdalena Brzeska in an interview with “Bild”. – She was one of my first gymnasts when I came to Ulm. She was very talented, hard-working, and always gave 100 percent during training, she added.
-As Brzeska recalled, Mia Sophie Lietke had a love for sports. Her goal was to compete in the Olympics and she did everything to achieve it.
“In these difficult times, we express our deepest condolences to Mia’s family. We wish you strength to cope with this event,” DTB said in a statement.
Lietke has been training at the national team center in Fellbach-Schmiden since January 2023. Her club was Berliner TSC.
