“Ceferin on VAR”. There is thunder in Ukraine after the situation with Mudryk. What do the Italians say?

“A scandalous episode” – this is how the media described the lack of a penalty kick after a foul on Mykhailo Mudryk at the end of the match Ukraine – Italy (0:0). This result meant that the defending champions could enjoy advancing to Euro 2024.

The stake of the match played at the BayArena in Leverkusen was direct promotion to the European Championship. The Ukrainian national team had to win, a draw was enough for their rivals.

– Italy must advance to the European Championship. Otherwise, there will be a disaster, said Ceferin, quoted by ESPN. These words made Ukrainians hot, so such a strong reaction is not surprising.

The Italians breathed a sigh of relief

On the Apennine Peninsula they also commented on the controversial situation. How did they approach the topic? “92nd minute: Mudryk, after Zubkov’s low cross from the right, touches the ball before Cristante, who intervenes and apparently commits a foul,” writes “La Gazzetta dello Sport” directly.

“The referee signals to continue the game. The Ukrainian bench explodes and Zinchenko protests strongly. Fortunately for us, VAR does not call the referee to the monitor to check the dynamics of the contact,” it added.

Giuseppe Bergomi also expressed his opinion on the key action. Former excellent defender of Inter Milan and the Italian national team, for which he played 81 matches.

– There is contact, and Mudryk was faster – he said in an interview with Sky Sport. He added that perhaps the referee did not whistle a foul because of the way Mudryk fell (too expressive).

– I say it’s okay. But if the roles were reversed, what would we say? There is contact, I don’t have much to add – he concluded.
