The first session of the Sejm of the new term was full of sharp exchanges of opinions. Politicians of the United Right and the opposition argued over the position of Deputy Speaker of the Sejm for Elżbieta Witek and the election of the chamber’s representatives to the National Council of the Judiciary. Ultimately, PiS lost the vote on Witek’s seat in the Sejm presidium and on the appointment of members of the National Council of the Judiciary. In the PiS community, this was considered a manifestation of political revenge on the part of the opposition.
On Tuesday, at noon, the Sejm will resume the first session of the new term, which was interrupted last week. Deputies will vote on the selection of members of parliamentary committees, including the Committee for European Union Affairs, the Committee for Deputies’ Ethics and the Committee for Secret Services. They will also elect members of the State Tribunal.
Czarnek: There will be another scandal
As Przemysław Czarnek predicts, Tuesday’s proceedings will most likely end with “another scandal.” The coalition offered Law and Justice to chair only 5 committees. PiS believes that he should be given twice as many positions.
– There will certainly be another scandal at today’s session of the Sejm, because the largest grouping in the Sejm has received an offer to chair only five parliamentary committees, including two medium-sized ones and three small ones, none large ones – said the Minister of Education and Science on Radio Zet.
-Czarnek recalled that four years ago the then opposition was given the chairmanship of 14 committees. For this reason, the current actions of KO, Third Way and Left politicians are, in his opinion, an “anti-democratic scandal.” According to the PiS politician, his party should chair 12 committees, because this is the result of parliamentary arithmetic.
