For years, chickens, turkeys and ducks fed with fodder with admixed technical oils have been delivered to the Polish market. The feeds contained an additive that was not suitable for use in food, only for the production of lubricants, technical oils and biofuels. A couple who had for years falsified fat records were arrested.

A great investigation into feed has been conducted since January this year by prosecutor Krzysztof Gienas from the West Pomeranian Branch of the National Public Prosecutor’s Office in Szczecin.

The CBŚP action took place on Tuesday. Nearly 66 plants belonging to several of the largest concerns producing, among others, animal feed. The total number of revenues for 2021 of four of the largest plants is as much as PLN 15 billion.

The feed samples and documentation related to the products purchased by the plants from the company from Poznań – Berg + Schmidt, in which 90% of shares are held by a German concern under the same name, were secured. Until now, it was run in Poland together by Maciej J. and his wife Monika, who also owned a minority stake in the Polish branch of the company.

The company is perceived as a leading producer and distributor of fodder oils and fats. It has been on the market for almost half a century, and its employees are called “lipid specialists”.

The company’s revenue for 2020 from the sale of fats amounted to over PLN 90 million. However, most of this amount comes from counterfeit products, investigators say. And they have evidence of it. Unfortunately, products distributed by the company should never end up as an ingredient in animal feed for human consumption.

Instead of food fats, fats are used to make lubricants

The rearing of poultry for human consumption is governed by strict conditions. The appropriate diet of chickens, turkeys or ducks is dictated by the rate of daily weight gain of the animals. Therefore, in industrial poultry farming, feed additives in the form of fats are used. It is thanks to them that the birds maintain an appropriate growth rate, and the laying hens increase the number of eggs laid. In addition, fats improve the absorption of nutrients from the feed.

Feed fats are produced, among others, by from rapeseed, sunflower, palm or coconut oil. They are added in both loose and liquid form. However, they must meet the relevant standards. Which of course is expensive.

The marriage of J. decided to circumvent all the guidelines, forging documents and working on non-compliant products. The president and owner of 10% in Berg + Schmidt and his wife Monika – president and owner of two smaller companies cooperating with the company, have been importing technical fatty acids to Poland from Russia, Ukraine, Malaysia and Romania for at least several years.

Fat products imported by a couple under no circumstances did not meet the standards and were not suitable for consumption and use in the food industry. It turned out that the fats they brought to Poland were waste from the production of more noble products or they were produced with the use of less demanding technologies.

They were heavily contaminated, did not meet the standards for food products and should not be used in the production of poultry feed. They were suitable only for the production of lubricants, biofuels and technical oils.

Moreover, according to information gathered by investigators, some of the fats imported by Berg + Schmidt could contain large amounts of pesticides. Their long-term consumption may contribute to an increased risk of developing lung cancer, prostate cancer and leukemia. In addition, pesticides damage the nervous system, increasing the risk of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.

Falsified research and certificates

Apparently, the products brought by the company to Poland were marked with the information that they are not suitable for consumption. However, the Poznań-based company “cleaned” the imported technical fatty acids in the laboratory and sold them as fodder for poultry.

Contaminated technical fats were mixed with the edible fats to improve the properties of these products for sale to feed manufacturers. As a result, the fats theoretically contained nutritional values, passed falsified tests and obtained falsified certificates, and then went on sale.

Counterfeit fats, purchased from the company at a favorable price by feed mills, were used in the food industry as an addition to poultry feed, which then ended up on store shelves and, as a result, on our tables.

The information gathered by investigators also shows that a small batch of technical fatty acids from Berg + Schmidt was purchased by an international petrochemical concert and then used in the production of lubricants.

Suspects were arrested

Investigators claim that Berg + Schmidt’s fraud could have continued since 2017, although for now the allegations cover the period from January 2020. However, the investigation is still ongoing, and on the basis of the collected documentation, analyzes of documents from previous years are to be carried out.

CBŚP detained 4 main suspects from the company Berg + Schmidt: the marriage of Maciej and Monika J., an accountant and proxy, and a laboratory assistant.

They were charged with participating in an organized crime group and fraud involving falsified certificates and fat testing.

Some of the suspects pleaded guilty, submitted statements and were released. However, the marriage of J. was arrested for three months on Thursday. Maciej and Monika J. were charged with additional charges of money laundering and gaining material benefits from the sale of fats with forged documentation. The sales revenue amounted to at least PLN 176 million.

According to Wirtualna Polska, in one of the letters sent by the Poviat Veterinary Inspectorate it was written that “the suspicious material was used for the production of all feed for poultry, ducks and turkeys intended for fattening. . potentially dangerous fodder entered the territory of the poviat state. “

The “sleeping chicken” recipe is conquering the internet. Experts alarm: “it is dangerous …
