The new Mitsubishi ASX is the twin of the popular Renault Captur SUV

-

Now, after more than a year’s break, the time has come for the next generation of Mitsubishi ASX. Before the new car, it is a difficult task to match the popularity of its predecessor. The previous Mitsubishi ASX was developed together with the PSA concern, and its sister models were the Citroen C4 Aircross and Peugeot 4008 (both produced by Mitsubishi).

In the second edition, the manufacturer went a step further in the advancement of cooperation with other brands, because although the cooperator is no longer PSA (Stellantis concern), the second generation of ASX is actually a Renault Capur with other inscriptions and the Mitsubishi logo on the hood or on the steering wheel.

New Mitsubishi ASX – a successful copy of the popular model

The second generation Mitsubishi ASX differs from the original only in terms of the filling of the radiator grille. The manufacturer boasts that the front part of the body is shaped in the characteristic style of a dynamic shield (Dynamic Shield), on which a logo composed of three diamonds is displayed. In addition, there were also characteristic headlights with impressive fangs. The rear is dominated by the C-shaped lights, and the Mitsubishi lettering on the hatch.

As befits an SUV, there were also covers under the bumpers and black plastic covers on the wheel arches. The whole is complemented by curves of the body, which give the car a massive look, and 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels.

The new Mitsubishi ASX – functional interior

The new Mitsubishi ASX is also a successful car in terms of interior layout. For a B-class SUV, there is a lot of space in both rows of comfortable seats (we could check this during the pre-premiere presentation). Both front and rear tall people have enough space at knee height and overhead.

Added to this is a quite roomy trunk. Although 397 liters is a bit too little for family, holiday trips, but for weekend trips or large, weekly shopping, it is quite enough.

The new Mitsubishi ASX – a modern cockpit

The Mitsubishi ASX’s strengths are also a comfortable driving position and easy multimedia operation. Individual functions are activated by traditional knobs, buttons or via a touch screen.

Depending on the selected version, it has a diagonal of 7- or 9.3 inches. The standard of each version is Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and in the richest audio from Bose.

There are three types of gauges available on the new Mitsubishi ASX. From the basic analog set with a built-in 4.2-inch screen, through a customizable digital set with a 7-inch screen, to a fully personalized digital 10.25-inch driver display, which also allows you to display the navigation map.

The new Mitsubishi ASX – from gasoline to plug-in hybrids

Mitsubishi ASX was built on the CMF-B platform jointly developed by the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance. Thanks to it, it is possible to use not only internal combustion engines, but also soft hybrid and full hybrid (HEV) as well as plug-in variant (PHEV).

The base power unit is a 91 HP 3-liter petrol engine mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. Next up is the 12 volt, soft 1.3 DI-T hybrid. There is a choice of a 140 hp variant with a manual gearbox, and a 158 hp variant, which comes with a dual-clutch 7-speed gearbox as standard.

Mitsubishi ASX will be the first model of the Japanese brand to get a classic hybrid. In this case, the 1.6 petrol engine works with two electric motors, and the torque is supplied to the wheels thanks to an automatic transmission with several operating modes.

The new Mitsubishi ASX can run on its own

At the top of the engine range was a plug-in hybrid which, like the classic hybrid, uses a 1.6-liter gasoline engine and two electric units. This version will include a battery with a capacity of 10.5 kWh and, after charging it, it will be possible to travel in purely electric mode.

The new Mitsubishi ASX will be produced at a factory in Spain, and its market launch is scheduled for spring 2023. The manufacturer promises that the prices will be at the same level as the Renault Captura, whose purchase costs start at PLN 81,500. The advantage of the Japanese model will be a 5-year mechanical warranty (limited to 100,000 km).

The new Mitsubishi ASX – in our opinion

The new ASX is not Mitsubishi’s own design, but such measures resulting from the cooperation of various concerns are nothing new today. In addition to utility values, this model is additionally tempted by a five-year warranty while maintaining a price level similar to the cost of purchasing the French original.
